After four Hubble gyroscopes had failed, the mission was moved forward so astronauts could restore the observatory’s ability to point accurately. In three spacewalks, the crew replaced rate-sensing units and carried out other repairs and upgrades. Hubble was released from Discovery’s payload bay on Christmas Day.

STS-103 spacewalk imagery · NASA Image and Video Library. Explore NASA’s STS-103 mission history.

The artifact

The removable specimen jar contains a small, genuine piece of payload bay liner that flew aboard Discovery on STS-103. The payload bay was the Shuttle’s working cargo space: the place where satellites, laboratories, and servicing hardware traveled to orbit and where the crew conducted major mission operations. This modest piece of liner connects directly to that extraordinary workspace.

A one-of-a-kind specimen selection

Only a very limited number of these flight-flown specimens are available.
