On April 23, 2019, a meteorite was observed streaking through the sky then impacting the ground near the town of Aguas Zarcas, Costa Rica. Locals and scientists alike immediately recovered fragments of the meteorite, protecting these samples from terrestrial contamination.

This exceptional level of preservation makes Aguas Zarcas one of the most widely studied meteorites in modern research, particularly in astrobiology. As a primitive CM2 carbonaceous chondrite, it is rich in both prebiotic organic molecules (such as amino acids) and ancient pre-solar grains (stardust older than our Sun). Scientists analyzed this uncontaminated chemistry to gain direct insight into the materials available during the formation of the Solar System and potential cosmic origins of life's basic building blocks.
