The Wall That "Wasn't Being Built"

On the night of August 12, 1961, East German soldiers began tearing up streets and laying barbed wire. Only days earlier, East German leader Walter Ulbricht had claimed, "No one has the intention of erecting a wall."

Narrator: He definitely had the intention.

It eventually stretched 96 miles (155km) around West Berlin. It wasn't just one wall— it was two! In between was the "Death Strip," filled with sand (to show footprints), tripwires, and fierce dogs. 

When the wall finally "fell" on November 9, 1989, thousands of people (nicknamed Mauerspechte, or "Wall Woodpeckers") swarmed the barrier with hammers and chisels to claim their own pieces of history.

From Concrete Barrier to Canvas

While the East side of the wall remained a sterile, deadly grey, the West side became the world’s longest art gallery. Street artists from around the globe covered the West Berlin side in layers of vibrant graffiti, turning a symbol of oppression into a riot of color and protest.
