The Dawn of Life: Strelley Pool Stromatolite

Long before the age of dinosaurs, trees, or even breathable oxygen, the Earth was a hostile, alien world. This specimen represents the only survivors of that time: the Strelley Pool Stromatolites, excavated from the Pilbara Craton in Western Australia. Widely accepted as the oldest fossil evidence of life on Earth, this 3.43 billion-year-old layered stone offers a rare window into the Archean Eon.

Stromatolites are not traditional fossils like bones or shells. Instead, they are "biogenic" structures created by colonies of single-celled microbes (cyanobacteria). These sticky microbial mats thrived in ancient shallow waters, trapping sediment and minerals layer by layer to build the rock structures you see today.

This specimen is more than just geology; it is our deepest biological heritage. It captures the exact moment when life began to shape the planet, surviving against all odds to pave the way for every living thing that followed.

We have several pieces of the Strelley Pool Stromatolite available, all similar in size and appearance. You will receive our choice from the available samples.
